Windows should normally know how to handle GPT, yes.  I honestly don’t know 
why.  Perhaps GPT handling only extends as far as internal disks, but not 
external ones; perhaps on external disks the EFI system partition breaks the 
one-partition rule.  Honestly, I don’t know, but if I were you, I’d try some 
experiments to find out.  Maybe erasing the disk didn’t just set it to MBR, but 
you really *did* have multiple partitions, so try a GPT disk with just the one 
partition.

Regardless of the reason, I’m glad it’s working now.  MBR is fine for external 
media, so long as the partition is 2 TB or less in size.  As a general rule, 
FAT32 is preferable for portability, and for any disk with size less than or 
equal to 32 GB; otherwise, choose ExFAT.
