David,
Have you considered possibly using the search feature within mail being
that first letter navigation doesn't work?
WinMail is open, press command option F, as in find. would this be a
viable option for you?

Generally I use the standard view all the time and frankly I get a bit lost

Although I am totally blind I love the ability to use the preview pane in
standard view and am one of the people who routinely use VO J to quickly
read emails.
The major annoyance in standard view is the inability to use first letter
navigation to jump to messages sorted by name from in the inbox. Un less
somebody can enlighten me it is only possible to use first letter
navigation to jump to a message in Classic View. Consequentially if I need
to do this I change the sort order, change to classic view to find the
email I need by first letter navigation and then switch back to standard
view..

I have long since suspected that Apple will, eventually, discontinue the
classic view in Mail. This is just my opinion, of course.
The funny thing is, whenever I see non-voiceOver users, including those in
the Apple store, using Mac Mail, they are not using the classic view. I
realize that the number of people I interact with is less than miniscule
but it is an indication of something, I dare say.
The truth is, again in my opinion, when used correctly, the standard view
is unbeatable. Again, just my opinion.

Perhaps I should stop using the classic view too, then. I’d resent it, but
the only way of avoiding the horrible, terrible slowdowns in Mail presently
seems to be not to use that view.
Deliberate sabotage so Apple can obsolete that view and further solidify
the iOSification of the Mac? :)
Must try MailMate again soon, to see where we stand with that. I’d sure
love an alternative to Mail.
