A couple of things.

You don't absolutely need the DropBox "app" - what the download does is
simply create a folder in the Finder and a DropBox folder listing in the
left pane of every Finder window. It also creates an icon in your menu bar
(it looks kind of like an open box with four flaps) that makes it quicker
to go to your files on DropBox, to see if files placed locally have been
uploaded to the cloud, and to visit your local folder. The folder on your
Mac always syncs with the one in the cloud so, eventually, you have a copy
of each file in two places.

You can use your browser and visit your DropBox account without the "app".
It's a little awkward because you have to use web-page file transfer modes,
instead of simply saving a copy locally and eventually seeing it on DropBox.

It's been a while since I installed DropBox, but I suspect, from what you
said, that you already installed it. Check your menu bar and your Finder
windows. If you see DropBox, you've succeeded.
