There really isn’t anything special you need to do; iTunes audiobooks are just
regular files on disk, which you can back up along with the rest of your data.
They are stored, by default, in ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Audiobooks. Simply
copying that folder to an external drive or a cloud repository like Dropbox, or
using Time Machine, will make sure the files in that location are backed up.
You can re-add the files back to your iTunes library in many different ways.
For example, you could back up your entire iTunes folder, then simply copy the
folder into ~/Music once you’ve done a clean install of Mac OS X. That’s the
Music folder within your home folder. You could also copy your audiobooks into
~/Music/iTunes/iTunes/iTunes Media/Automatically add to iTunes. That will cause
iTunes to automatically add the books back to your library when the program is
next opened. These are general strategies that can apply to audiobooks, music,
ringtones, apps, or any iTunes media.

The only thing special about audiobooks that are purchased from the iTunes
Store is that they have copy protection. You might be asked for your Apple ID
and password to re-authorize your computer to play the protected content.
Simply enter them when requested then hit the OK button to re-authorize your
computer to play the content.

Is this somewhat clear? :)

Subject: Preserving iTunes audiobooks when performing a clean install

Dear all

I have a lot of audiobooks that I've purchased from iTunes. When El capitan
<capitan:> is release in the autumn, what would be the best way of getting
them back into iTunes if I was to perform a clean install of the new os, rather
than the regular upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any help with this task..

Daniel
