Pegasus Mail was awesome, back in the day. It’s still being maintained but I’m
not sure I’d want to use it now—or even if I could.

MailMate is promising for we power-users, but there are still some
accessibility challenges. Thunderbird is off, on OS X. Mozilla don’t seem to
have put in the same level of commitment for OS X as Windows in their stuff.
Thunderbird can be made to do more than it first appears, using extensions; it
also correctly formats plain text messages, unlike Mail.app.

I’m already aware of the changes in Mail that have been made in El Capitan;
Mail was the first app I tried. I still think we need an alternative mail
client. This on-off access to one of the most important applications on any
OS, and the lack of options, is a problem that I think we should acknowledge
exists for some people.

Alpine or other text-based programs would of course work, but IMO the
experience is best with BRLTTY and braille under Linux; on OS X it’s just
miserable, although doable in a pinch.
