VMWare Fusion, like most virtualization systems, stores all the Windows data on a fake C drive which shows up on the Mac side as a giant multi-GB file which grows as you store more stuff on the Windows side. That package file can be placed anywhere you want, including external drives. VMWare might ask you if you moved or copied it when you do but after that it should work just fine. You can also tell it where to create a new virtual machine and just point it to your external drive. A NAS drive would probably also work but it might be kind of slow compared to a local drive.

When using Fusion it should be possible. Chose to save the Windows.exe file or
what the name is on the external drive during the Fusion installation first
maybe and then also the windows.exe file of course. Remember i could do that a
while back. At least, the windows.exe started from the external drive. Don’t
have at the moment, but will install fusion etc. at the end of this year.

If you try the guide linked, let me know if it works. Read the comments from

One of my problems here is that I only have a 120 GB hard drive, and there is
only about 40 GB left on it. I’m sure that’s not enough to install windows.
If there is a way to run it on an external drive using fusion or virtual
machine, I would be interested in knowing if it could be done. I have
installed lots of music software to record with on here, so don’t have lots of
room left.

Why not use the Win7 PE Disk?
It has NVDA, and talks you through the install.
it even contains setup files for all the Windows 7 installs.
you will need a USB sound card to hear NVDA while installing Windows 7.

Hello,

The partition is completed in the bootcamp assistant while you have speech from voiceover: I
used a variety of apps from my iPhone6 including: KNFB Reader, BeMyEyes, and Facetime. With
the KNFB Reader, I increased the brightness to 100%. I was able to capture the text on the
screen. I used BeMyEyes to confirm that I was on the right drive and to format it correctly.
However, the issue that I came into into was that I couldn't get the cursor down into the
right-hand corner to press the "next" button. That's when I changed to using
Facetime. Also, on Applevis there's an article on how to install Windows without sight

order, it gave me the keystrokes to use. Hth.

Hi. Speaking of windows on the mac, I need to reinstall windows seven
ultimate 64 bit on a newly created bootcamp partition.

How did you get around having no speech during the first part of the
process where you had to select the default partition and format it to
ntfs before continueing?

the unattended xlm file route doesn't work for seven for me as it
totally erased my drive by default. That option worked great for
installing win xp via bootcamp but I take it that is no longer an
option for windows seven or later?

Thanks,

Cameron.

Hi Ted,

Both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 work well.

Running Windows 7 myself but did utilise Windows 8.1 on my old clasic
MacBook Pro for about 16 months. ( I believe the new MacBook Pros and the
MacBook only support Windows 8 or 8.1 happy to be corrected on this point
however).

Of course another option is to wait until Microsoft takes the wrappings off
Windows 10.

The official date of release is July 29.

What ever option you choose it'll be a great experience!

Hi all. I have some questions about installing windows on a separate
partition. Since I am running a macbook pro, and only have about 40 of
120 GB available, Can I install windows on an external hard drive and use
it? Next, Since I'm running Yosemite, what OS do I have to go with if I
do this? I have windows 7 and windows 8 available. Thanks for any and
all input.
