Well, for the sake of the OP, I sincerely hope you’re both right.  When I next 
get chance I’ll do a new initial setup of FileVault and see how it goes, but 
the last time I tried it was very clear that I’d need either password or key, 
and the only way to change the password was by putting in the key.

As a general rule, and in case it’s not already clear, good modern cryptography 
is dangerously effective.  Don’t forget your keys!  Losing them is, as far as 
anyone knows, practically equivalent to data loss.
