I am presuming that you know that you get the word count by making the
Statistics window visible. You can make this visible by going to the window
menu and under palettes pressing enter on statistics.

Then you can consult the word count at any time by bringing up the window
chooser and switching to the statistics window.
When you bring up window chooser you will hear the name of your document in one
window and the statistics window will be labelled by the number of characters
in your document. However switching to this window will enable you to also
check words paragraphs etc as well.

Personally` I use Numpad commander so I can bring up the window chooser simply
by pressing the slash key on the numpad so access to the statistics window
is pretty slick and easy but you could also assign a keystroke to window
chooser in keypad commander. Perhaps option W which would be useful in more
applications than Nisus.
