Hi Colin I had this happen when i first updated to yosemiti and i went to the 
user library and deleted any of the vo plist files command down arrow to select 
them all and after that all went back to normal, because there could have been 
a currupt speech file and as they re generate that should fix the problem.All 
the best and i hope that helps. then you can check that other box to do with 
the apple scripts.
