I'm sorry to say you're wrong on one thing. ITunes doesn't! have to be
always opened for it to work. I've been using an apple TV now since 2011,
and I've never once had to have ITunes up and constantly running, and
believe you me, my Apple TV gets a heck of a workout, so believe me, I
should know. The only time it has to be up is if you're wanting to access
your movies via ITunes sharing.

Apple TV works.
It’s not as generally useful as other streaming and DVR devices, but if all
you want is Netflix and iTunes and Home Sharing (requires iTunes to be open
on a computer) and your content is mostly up on Apple’s cloud, you should be
set.
