Well, not sure why vo+right isn't working, however, I can! answer your
question about the system dialog. In yosemite, they changed the look a bit.
It used to just be a little text box that popped up in the top right corner
of the screen, and as you'd type, the results would populate virtically
right directly below the box. Now, in Yosemite, when you invoke Spotlight,
there is a literal dialog box which pops up in the center of the screen. I
know this as I have enough vision to see it. So in other words, it didn't
used to be a physical dialog, whereas now, it is.

Yes, I’ve tried this. This is what is happening: I press command space and I
hear “spotlight system dialog” and I cannot figure out why it is saying
system dialog. Never had that before. I type in something and one choice
comes up. All that happens when I vo right is it says spotlight system
dialog; vo right again and it goes back to the one choice.
