Yes, this feature has been there since the very beginning of Yosemite, and 
you’re prompted the first time you install a system update to turn it on.  I 
thought it was cool, until it failed to restart my machine with Fusion running, 
but not without first closing every other app.  Turned the feature off.  The 
only option I now have enabled is that for “Install system data files and 
security updates” and then only because you won’t get the updates by any other 
means (not even if you check manually).

If you like automatic updates, get a ChromeBook. :)
