Thanks Ann for answering that. I was busy doing something else.
I am now running OS X 10.10.3 and I’m not having any problems with letters 
cutting out at all. In fact, it’s been just shortly after I updated to 10.10 
that I had the problem.
So, right now, I’m quite happy with the state of things on the Mac.
