The workaround for this is to try using VueScan which can interface between your scanner and Abbey Finereader. Unfortunately even this solution did not work for me as my scanner was not even supported on VueScan.
However look at

There is a trial version I think which would definitely tell you whether VueScan will be able to see your scanner on the Mac.
