Hi Krister. First, let me say that you can export to word formats in textedit just fine. To do this, make a new rich text document using command N followed by command shift T. When you save your file, simply add the .doc or .docx extension and it will open properly in word.
If you stull need the extra features of pages or you just want the piece of mind of using a pages to word converter, here are some tips that may help you. Pages is very cluttered. To get to an edit box where you can compose a document, you have to interact with first the layout area, and then the body field. To make formatting changes, you then have to stop interacting with everything, go over to the formatter group, and interact with that. It's very tedious. Fortunately, all of the formattting keyboard commands you know and love from pages are still here. I hope this helps get you started.
