Hey Believer, I have had the same exact issue you are having with DVDs not being recognized, and it is not th ripper rather the DVD drive on the mac. I did a google search about this a few weeks ago and you have to go in to some setting on your computer and reset the drive which I have not done, got to get the time to do it, but yes very frustrating as very few of my discs burnt from Netflix play on the mac.
