Juliet to do this you have to set your iMessage to send to say an email instead of just your phone number. Once the code is sent you can switch it back but I had to do it that way in order to get it forwarded. Somebody else might be able to make it clearer but you need to associate iMessage with an email address long enough to get the code sent and entered then you can turn that back off.
