I think it's best done by a combination of: 1. A good book on the subject. I don't know of a good OS X-oriented book. For Linux, which is similar, there is a freely available book by William E. Shotts Jr., The Linux Command Line. You can download it from the author's Web site in PDF format: http://www.linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php Once you've learned the basics, a book such as Unix Power Tools, 3rd ed., published by O'Reilly and available from bookshare.org, is recommended. 2. Manual pages. The "man" command allows you to look up comprehensive descriptions of many commands. For example, typing "man ls" (without the quotation marks) will give you a reference manual entry describing the ls command. 3. Practice.
