I am no expert in this area but this what I understand. 1. Viruses on an OS level are not cross platform and so a Windows exe cannot execute on the Mac side. However there are some caveats. A. In terms of stealing and damaging data if the Windows Virus can access the data stored on the mac partition then obviously it can affect the mac environment during a Windows session even though it cannot run itself when the Mac is Active. B. Some code , especially on a Malware level is designed to be cross platform. For example, Java based apps and javascript functionality inSafari . If you are going to use potentially doggy web sites with possible chance of Malware infection then probably you need protection on your Mac irrespective of what your Windows BootCamp situation is anyway. Something like MacScan would seem to be indicated. You could alternatively also eliminate the risk by disabling javascript inSafari and/or decline to install Java to run apps like Stanza ebook reader but of course you could lose valuable functionality for this increase security..
So I think the chances of problems are probably low but cannot be said to be non-existent. Protection on your Mac side as well as the Windows side would hopefully pretty much eliminate the theoretical risk .
