You may want to look into Lilypond. That's free. It is a music engraving
program, and there is a learning curve but it sounds to me like it will do what
you want.

Subject: Hand-coding midi files on Mac?

  Hi all,
I want to create music on the Mac. I know Garageband is the default answer,
but here's the thing: I can't actually play the piece, but I can construct it.
That is, I could tell the computer to play these two notes with the right hand
for x measures, while doing this with the left hand. So, though I can't play
the music, I would like to somehow create a sequence that, when saved to a Midi
file, will be the music. I can then use that midi file to learn how to actually
play the piece.

Perhaps Garageband can do this. If so, how? If not, what do people recommend
for hand-sequencing music instead of just recording it from a keyboard or amp?
Again, I need to be able to put together a midi file without just playing the
music I want. If GB is able to do this, are there tutorials or podcasts? Thanks
in advance for any suggestions.
