Hello Denise,

The short answer to your question is that the items listed in your iTunes
Library interface are merely pointers to the actual files on your
computer/network. They, the items listed that is, are not the source files,
themselves.

It's really no different than having a sign on the street point you in a
certain direction in order to get to a specific store. The store may burn down
or change locations but the sign, still points you in that same old direction
unless someone updates/changes it. With this in mind, you can see that
although the sign points to the store, the sign is not directly linked to the
store. As a result, in order for the sign to be accurate with regard to the
location of the store, it must be manually updated to point in the correct
direction.

As for your specific issue, at some point and for whatever reason, the source
file to which your iTunes Item is pointing has been in some way either moved,
deleted, or renamed.

Mark

Subject: itunes 12 problem

Hello all,
I recently went to locate a song in itunes 12 that has been in my library for
several versions of itunes now. the song is listed, but itunes cannot play it
because it could not find it, and has offered me the chance to locate it. what
happened to cause this problem? And while is it listed in the library if cannot
be found there? thanks.
