Thanks Tim, I have tried all of those things. None of the messages are claiming 
an unread status but every time I switch over to messages VO announces I have 3 
unread messages. I will reboot my computer to see if it fixes. :( I have shut 
the messages app down several times but the 3 unread messages won’t clear. I 
have not been able to find a command to make a message status read. either.
