Tim may be right about this. But also, I believe that to use auto-login you have to re-enable it in the security pane of System Preferences. It's in General under Security. There's a checkbox for disabling automatic login. If that is checked and you haven't unlocked to make further changes, you will have to unlock right there in that window of system preferences and uncheck the checkbox; I believe your password will be requested. Perhaps this was already covered and I missed it. Once that checkbox is unchecked, then go back into Users and see if you can choose auto-login.
