Try this. 1. Navigate to the part of a sound file you want to drop a marker in for editing.
2. Now, Rout the insertion point to the play head by pressing Cmd+y. I think this is where you're going wrong. 3. Drop a marker by pressing p. There is a more envolved way to do this but p is the quickest. 4. Navigate to the end of the portion you want to take out. 5. Now, Press Cmd+left arrow to select to the marker you dropped before.
