That's a pretty drastic step. Have you tried repairing permissions from the 
recovery partition first?
1, reboot the mac and at the chime sound quickly press and hold command+R for 
around 10 seconds.
2, Turn VoiceOver on with command F5.
3, interact and select the disk utility option from the table of options. ( 
incidentally, reinstalling the OS is one of the options here - don't do that 
yet!)
4, in disk utility, select MacHD in the table of disks and then navigate over 
to "repair disk permissions" and hit return. in a little while the disk 
permissions repair will be complete.
5, command Q the app and then command Q the options screen.
6, you'll be asked to select a disk for rebooting or something like that - make 
sure you select the MacHD or wherever your OS is located ( usually MacHD)
7, the system will reboot into your normal OS and disk permissions will be 
repaired.

See if that does the trick before going ahead with a OS reinstall.
