No time at all the first couple attempts. 2nd time gave an error
message. Then I set security options and that may have done it. The
drive is now formatted and Time Machine took over.
There was absolutely no doubt when it did work. Because Voiceover
goes mad when landed on the progress, I used the braille display to
track its progress.

Well I want to format my external drive so went into Disk Utility
and selected the drive then Erase, followed the prompts and clicked the
erase button and again when asked if I was sure. After that, nothing
happens.
