Quad core means you have four cores, whereas most Macs have two cores. While you'd think at first that this would double the speed of the computer, that doesn't actually happen. A quad core is great if you have software that can take advantage of it, but most software is not optimized for so many cores and so the speed gains will be not very impressive. There will be gains, but nothing like you might be imagining. Most people get along on dual core processors just fine; the big factors are the clock speed (the gigahertz) and how much ram the computer has.
