Alex, just a thought but have you over time downloaded more than one voice fro 
the Voiceover Utility?

I know this wouldn't be the reason why your hard drive should be filling up so. 
However, if you have more than one voice that you don't use anymore, maybe it 
might be worth it getting rid of it and in the process gaining some disc space 
back.

I know this doesn't solve your problem but just an idea for what it is worth.

I hope you will solve the mystery of this strange behaviour.
