Hi,

For app specific settings, go into VO Utility and choose Activities (cmd-0).  
You can set things up differently with quite a bit of specifics there.  If you 
check the Additional box, you could go into the Pronunciation dictionary and 
remove the entries for things like :) and ;).  You could use Activities to 
change the voice while in X-Code as well.  You may wish to use Fred as he is 
one of the original Mac voices and is less breathy than Alex.
