Hi, The best way is to place the birthdays in through the Contacts app. Birthdays placed in your Contacts are automatically put into the Birthdays Calendar and as long as you have the "Include Birthdays" item checked in the General pane of your Calendar Preferences, they will automatically show up in your regular calendar. For anniversaries, you'll need to enter them directly into your desired calendar and set them as recurring yearly so that they continue to appear year after year.
