Scott, Under Mavericks, the escape key's functionality changed. You can press Option-Escape key to actuate a standard escape key function. Also, VO has a general escape key, when VO-Escape key is pressed. However, the VO sequence doesn't always work for me, while the Option-Escape key, pretty much, does the trick all the time.
