Hi,

I, too, am not having any issues with the Messages app and my iPhone 5.  this 
probably won't make any difference since you've already shutdown/restarted your 
iPhone, but maybe you could humour me.  Double-press the Home button to bring 
up the App Switcher, swipe right until you find the Messages app then swipe up. 
 VO should say Close Messages.  If it does, then double-tap on it to totally 
release it from memory.  Swipe left back to the Home option and double-tap on 
it to go back to the main level of your iPhone.  You could then attempt to 
start your Messages app again and see if you have any better luck.  Beyond 
that, it looks like a restore is in order to me.  Note that, if you do a 
backup, either to iCloud or to your Mac, you shouldn't lose any of your 
settings and new, uncorrupt versions of your base apps should be brought back 
onto your iPhone.
