Hi, 

To answer your second question first, check all your settings in view menu and 
preferences, and remember to set any folder that isn't behaving as you like to 
the view you like. 

To answer your first question, as I already said, when you open a folder, you 
just see the contents of that folder, when you expand it, you see its contents 
as well as everything you could already see, so it's personal preference.
