If you are on Mavericks, that command has changed to vo-cmd-enter. I haven't 
tested this, but try:

1. Interact with the table of contacts you want to select, and move to the 
first of the contacts to be copied.
2. VO-cmd-enter twice (it was selected, so the first time de-selected it).
3. VO-arrow to the next one you want. Be sure not to arrow without the vo keys 
as this will de-select everything. Once on the next one, vo-cmd-enter (only 
once from here on out).
4. Once you have done this for all the contacts you want, cmd-c, move to your 
new group, and cmd-v.

Again, I haven't personally tested this, but it works in Finder and I imagine 
it will work in Contacts.
