No, that's not true. Intel Macs can boot from USB, FireWire or Thunderbolt. 
Power PC Macs can only boot from FireWire under OS X.

If you go the SuperDuper route, and you want the ability to use your external 
drive as a bootable drive - something I do - the drive will have to have  
Firewire
connectivity. You can't boot from a USB drive as far as I know. I use the LaCie 
drives, they're good product and you can get them in firewire/USB. Also, you 
can get a Firewire800/thunderbolt adaptor to make the connection to your mac.
