Plus, Messages on mac is good for more than iMessages. I set it up to use for Facebook chatting, and you can enter AIM, Yahoo, Google, Jabber, and other accounts if you want to. It isn't texting a cell phone, but it will do the job for a lot of different services. Nowadays, so many people have smartphones that texting an actual number isn't as important as it used to be.
