Yes that is what I finally stumbled on to, thanks for the help. It seems to be running just fine at the moment.

Once you open the DMG or DiskiMaGe file you should have an additional fake drive show up. In that fake drive will be the Chrome app. You copy that, go to your Applications folder, and paste. That copies the whole thing to your Apps folder. You can then throw the disk image and the fake drive in the trash. You can then run Chrome from your apps folder. Sounds like you might have been running Chrome from the disk image and never copied it to the Applications folder.
