Maybe both these together make the difference, but individually they obviously don't. My MacBook is running Mavericks, and my iMac has 16GB RAM. For what it's worth, I don't notice any lag or anything with the MacBook. I ill eventually upgrade my iMac to Mavericks, so I guess I'll properly test it then. In the meantime I'm still interested in any other possible causes. Sorry to be so difficult! :)
