I think you should confirm this on both devices to make sure. Also, once you know for sure that you are set up as iMAP on both devices there are all kinds of settings on both gmail and on your devices to make sure your mailbox behaviors are too your liking. There is even the whole confusion of deleting verses archiving. I absolutely do not archive because this practice boggles my mind. LOL! I prefer to delete my emails and have them be gone forever. Also, there are just so many issues or bugs that seem to be giving folks trouble using the apple mail client and gmail. I believe there has been fixes or patches put out by apple but some people seem to be having a lot of trouble. I have not really had any issues and I believe that has just been pure dumb luck. :) LOL! So, I said all this to say that there are a variety of issues that can be causing your problem and therefore you should start by investigating your settings within gmail and apple mail as well as on your iPhone. Unfortunately, I do not have a quick easy fix or answer for you. I am not an expert and the way gmail and apple mail do their dance can be quite hairy for my brain to understand.
