I hope that helped and that Spotify will suffice. :) I used to love Pandora but the last time I used it, I could not play any song or album on demand. Maybe they have changed their features though. Pandora does put out some good music and they do have a free subscription. You get audio ads when you have the free version though. Basically, in Pandora, you create a station based on a song or artist. Then Pandora uses some cool technology to create a station based on the song or artist you chose. Then you can thumbs down a song if you don't' want to hear it again on that station. You can also skip a song you do not feel like hearing. You only get a limited number of thumbs downs and skips for unpaid subscriptions.
