It does appear quite difficult and shouldn't be so. You may wish to report it 
as a bug.

Having said which, if you type an equals sign in the cell where you want your 
formula you can pull down the insert menu and select function and one of those 
options. But I'm not sure why you need to select from the format bar? Yes, I 
agree that if there's a tool provided then we should have access to it like 
everyone else. I wondered, are they formulas that are too difficult to write 
out manually?

You are not doing anything wrong. Hang in there and you'll find a way.
