Hi Mike,

I haven't installed Snow Leopard myself yet, I am in the process of doing so 
But if Snow Leopard is basically the same as Leopard, then if you go to the 
Finder's preferences  you can choose what appears on your desktop and Mac's 
HD is one of those choices. I'm not sure if you can remove the Documents and 
Downloads folder from the Dock though. Perhaps someone else can advise.
