I'd echo what Jon said. I own a m-audio keystation 61ez which is a controler keyboard only. If I use it under windows I have to install a driver, but on the mac, it works streight away. I like the idea of only using a controler keyboard and then letting garage band provide the sounds; i've played the drums on a old 500mhz ibook and they were very responsive - no noticeable lag at all.
