By default it makes incremental backups once an hour. You can change this to be less often using utilities like TM Error Logger
http://www.carnationsoftware.com/TM_Error_Log_WebPage.html which has a Backup Interval button to change the value to something larger. Incremental backups should only backup any files you have changed since the last backup so they go pretty quick.
