Hello,
Here's something I did that stopped the erratic reading in Mail. I  
unchecked Smooth Scrolling under system preferences under appearance.  
I did this yesterday morning and while I still have the problem with  
the message not automatically being read, it did stop the uneven  
reading of the text. But for treading the text I just press VO a and  
the message is read just fine.
