You can start the upgrade the way you just said yep. The other option is to put the disc in, it'll appear in the finder, and there's a file you can launch on there that'll be called something really obvious like "install snow leopard" that will restart and boot from cd for you. Whichever works for ya.
Can't say I've ever checked the size of an archive, but I'd be surprised if it's anything over 10 gb, so you should be fine. Role on Friday, I'll be queueing like a fanboy as per usual, just in the new Westfield store for a change of scenery lol.
