Jessie, have you got an external drive you can back stuff up too? I'm not talking a time machine backup since it seems your looking for more a long-term storage solution, but you can copy the /User/username/ Library/Mail folder to another location. You could always empty your / User/username/Library/Caches folder, which may help. Sorry, I think I missed the thread, but sounds like you just have a lot possibly in your cache, but not knowing the number of e-mails etc, there maybe other issues.
