You got it right but were probably confused. Option e followed by a vowel will give you that vowel with a acute accent. option i does the same thing but for a circumflex accent. I have forgotten what the grave accent is on the US keyboard. Used to be you could go into keycaps and figure this out. and the sighted can go into the internationalization system control panel and request a on- screen keyboard. Then they just hold down the option key and they can see all the international characters.
