Robert, those are a part of the Mac file system and I think they refer to those as resource forks. I can't recall because it has been a while, but although annoying, they can be deleted and are created only when you copy or delete files from the card. I thought there is a command line that can be done via the Terminal, which would prevent future occurrences of this, but I'd have to really dig around for that info.
