Good evening Cara,
You are correct in saying that 3MP is enough resolution for OCR. In fact, at
KNFBReading technology, and other such camera based OCR companies, we've
determined that 3MP is probably the minimal resolution necessary for
accurate text OCR. The issues that KNFBReading technology have had to deal
with is that of focuss, lighting conditions, camera control, and processing
speed. As you may guess, when lighting is concerned, there are a number of
new variables that arise. All this to say that we are and have been looking
at the capabilities of the iPhone and other devices on the market to
determine their potential.

No offense, but where are you getting the idea that a 3 mp camera
isn't powerful enough? -And, what does that actually mean?…

It's possible to take pictures at a much lower resolution than
that, which can clearly show text. -And I'm speaking without auto-
focus here. -Add the autofocus feature and 3 mp can be considerably
more than enough…

Now, the issue of flash / low-light performance might be something
to consider, but the resolution should be fine…

May I ask where your specs are coming from?… No disrespect
intended. I really would like to know…

Thanks so much and have a lovely evening!…

Smiles,

Cara :)

It's extremely doubtful that an application like this would be very
useful on the latest iPhone 3gs model since it's camera isn't yet
powerful enough. But perhaps the focus feature could help it make up
for its low amount of pixels?
